Normally at this time of the year your year 5 pupils would be receiving an invitation from Yorkshire Children’s Centre to attend a Safety Rangers sessions in July held at your local fire station – unfortunately, due to the current COVID-19 crisis you will be aware that we are unable to run these sessions at this time.
As we are being instructed by the government to stay at home, the risk of accidents in the home has increased, therefore the key safety messages children would normally learn at Safety Rangers are more essential and important than ever!
Please find attached an electronic booklet to help reduce the risk. This booklet has been designed as an easy read so it is child friendly with lots of pictures and tips to help educate families on the key risks, prevent accidents in the home and keep everyone safe.

The aims of the project are:
The project focusses on four key questions:
Who am I?
Create a poster describing who you are: what do you look like, what makes you unique, what are your interests, what kind of values you have, what you want to be, etc.
Who are we?
Think about your family and school. What things do you have in common? Write a poem titled, My Family or My School
Where do we live?
Research Dewsbury and your local area. Think about its history and what it has to offer, e.g. museums, shops, market, canals, parks, leisure activities. Write a report including pictures and drawings, (Could be your house, church or Mosque.)
How do we all live together?
What community groups are there and what do they offer.
Produce an information leaflet with details of the activities.
As part of the project we are researching interesting stories behind where we came from.
Did you or do you know someone in your family or local area, who has moved here from a different town or even different country? What were the reasons for the move and what brought them to Dewsbury? Write, draw, or create a Powerpoint of a story of how you, a family member or neighbour came to live in Dewsbury.
We used a pictorial method to make representations to show thousandths as fractions and decimals.
We used art to represent the setting in The Highwayman.
We had fun taking part in an Early Easter Egg Hunt where we had to find the letters scattered around the playground to unscrabble the hidden word.
For mental health week year 5 have been discussing physical and mental health, and what makes them unique.
Year 5 had a lovely afternoon painting and designing Ancient Greek pots.
Year 5 have had an exciting afternoon investigating which material is the best thermal conductor.
This half term we will be learning the sport of Fencing. Mr Noble came in on Wednesday (11th September) to teach us for the first time and we all had fun! We also learnt about vocabulary specific to fencing such as halt, en garde, foils and masks.
Year 5 had an eggcellent afternoon meeting the chickens and some children helped to tend to the children by giving them water and food.
